Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho recently made a surprising statement about Vinicius Jr., saying that if he were in the young player's shoes, he would have left the team in the summer to join a club where he is respected.
Vinicius Jr. will not play in tonight's home game against Sevilla, as he is serving the first of a four-match ban after receiving a straight red card in last week's 1-0 win over Villarreal.
The Brazil international thought he had scored his second goal of the season just 20 minutes after coming off the bench, but the goal was reviewed by VAR and disallowed. He was also shown a straight red card for pulling the hair of Nathan Saliba.
Vinicius Jr. has been struggling with his form this season, and his performance in midweek against Roma in the Champions League did not help. Despite this, Mourinho expressed his support for the player, saying that his love for the club and the city of Madrid led him to sign his contract.
"If I were him, I probably wouldn't be here," Mourinho quipped. "I would have forced my exit over the summer to a club, league, and country that respects me. But this club is his home, and that's why he has stayed. I doubt I would have the psychological strength to stay when I had so many options."
Mourinho's comments suggest that he respects Vinicius Jr.'s decision to stay with the team despite his struggles.
