The Italian football clubs AC Milan and Inter have unveiled plans for a new stadium, which will replace the iconic San Siro stadium. The new stadium, named the "Generali Stadium," will be ready for the 2031/32 season.
The design of the new stadium aims to bring spectators as close to the pitch as possible. The stands behind the goals will be set at a steep 37-degree incline, according to David Manica, a stadium specialist who worked on the project with Foster.
The design team started with the idea of proximity, bringing all the seats as close as possible to the field. Manica said the seats will be positioned in a way that will make spectators feel as though they are sitting on the grass.
The new stadium will also feature advanced acoustics, with the roof covering the stands and leaving only the pitch exposed. This design is intended to amplify the roar of the fans, creating a more intimate and atmospheric experience.
The Generali Stadium will be capable of hosting various events, including American football games, rugby matches, and concerts. The clubs paid 197 million euros to acquire the current stadium and its adjacent parking areas, where they will build their new shared home.
The project for the new San Siro will cost the two clubs 1.2 billion euros and will have a capacity of 71,500 seats, compared to the current 75,000. Construction is set to begin in 2028.
The new stadium will be a significant improvement over the current one, which has undergone several renovations over the decades but no longer meets the needs of spectators or the clubs.
